Candance Anderson
His mother, Candace Smith, was born in Hancock, Mississippi to Jenkins E Smith and Louisa F Smith. She had 6 other siblings: Gladys “Pat” Smith (1907-1980) , Ouida Mae Smith (1900-?) , Lucania “Jennie” Smith (March 31,1904 – October 3, 1994) , Harvis Smith (January 17,1895 – November 1, 1979) , Lora Smith (July 16, 1897 – January 18, 1973) , and Mabel Smith(1902- ?) . When she married Olen, she became a housewife and did not work outside the house. |
Winfred L. Anderson
Winfred L. Anderson attended Sellers Vocational School and completed his 4 years. After briefly working in the logging industry, Winfred was called up to the U.S. Army on April 7,1941, and was enlisted at Camp Shelby. He never saw deployment overseas; instead, he worked at the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies in Philadelphia, PA. By the time the war ended, he had attained the rank of sergeant; when the war ended, he decided to stay in the military. In 1947, he married Nora Lee Bosarge. They also had some children together. He died on Dec. 30, 1996 at the age of 76 and is now buried at Crane Creek Cemetery. |
Ruby Pauline Ladner
Ruby Pauline Ladner was the second oldest and was born in Hancock County. She attended the Sellers Vocational School and by the time of the 1940 census she was 19 and in her 2nd year of high school. She married a man named Tilmon Ladner, who was also a resident of Hancock County. Interestingly, Tilmon Ladner is a member of the Freemasonry. On Dec. 22, 1996, she died at the age of 77. She is buried in the Ladner Cemetery in Stone County, MS. |
Billy O. Anderson
Billy Ollen Anderson was roughly four years younger than Burnett and was born in Hancock County. In 1940, he was 10 years old and was attending the Sellers Vocational School, where, at the time, he was in a second grade. On Oct. 31, 1946, he registered for the draft. In February of 1955, he married a woman with the first name Jewel. He died on August 15, 1992 at the age of 63; he is now buried at Shaw Cemetery in Saucier, Harrison County. |
Jonnie M. Britton
Jonnie Mae Britton was born in Hancock Country. At the time of the 1940 census, she was 13 years old and was in the 7th grade at Sellers Vocational School. She married a man with the surname “Britton” (the first name is private). She and Mr.Britton went on to have one son, two daughters, nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Jonnie Mae Britton was a career nurse and was a member of the Crane Creek Baptist Church. She was a lifetime resident of Perkinston, MS. On Nov. 24, 1998, she died at the age of 72. |
Charlotte A. Elkins
The youngest child was Charlotte Ann Elkins. At the time of the 1940 census, she was 3 years old. She married a man named Charles Elkins, who was a Korean war veteran; he died on April 6, 2003. They lived most of their life together in Baton Rouge. They had a couple of children together and some grandchildren. She died on June 30, 2017 at the age of 81 and is buried at her family plot in Perkinston, MS. |
Burnett Before the War
Burnett was able to complete the 12th grade and thus was also able to graduate from Sellers Vocational School, historically located in Hancock County. He then went on to complete a business course in New Orleans. However, sometime before December 2, 1942, he was unemployed. On December 2,1942, Burnett filled out his enlistment papers and, in Jackson, on December 11, 1942, he became officially enlisted into the U.S. Army. |
